On April 9, 2021, the White House Office of Public Engagement held a briefing by the Acting Director and staff from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) on the President’s FY 2022 Discretionary Request. The request includes a historic investment in high-poverty schools and a total of $36.5 billion in Title I grants.  According to a letter from Acting Director Shalanda D. Young and accompanying budget documents sent to the Senate Appropriations Committee, this is the largest year-over-year increase since the Title I program began and includes a $20 billion increase in Title I grants for high-poverty schools. The President’s request also includes $102.8 billion for early childhood education, K-12 programs and higher education programs and asks for increases to student mental well-being supports, special education programs, community school initiatives, and a $100 million grant program geared towards school desegregation  To learn more about some of the key priorities reflected in the Discretionary Request click here.
