Schools Face Spikes in Kids Testing Positive for COVID-19; What to do with Extracurriculars (August 10, 2020)

As the 2020-21 school year gets underway, the process of deciding what to do about extracurricular activities has become increasingly difficult as COVID-19 cases in children spike. According to data from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association, at least 97,000 U.S. children tested positive for COVID-19 during the last two weeks of July, and 338,000 have tested positive since the beginning of the pandemic. At North Paulding High School in Georgia, where a student’s photo of a crowded school hallway has gone viral, instruction has gone temporarily online after six students and three staff members reported infections. In Israel, one student infected 25 teachers.

Presently, about a dozen states are moving the opening of sports to the spring of 2021, while others are moving ahead with fall sports, and many others have delayed sports or remain undecided.
