Please join us for the 2014 PAPSA annual conference, which will be held April 23-25 at the beautiful Eden Resort in Lancaster, PA. This year, the main sessions will be held on Thursday, April 24th and Friday, April 25th. There will be a special pre-conference seminar for those who wish to arrive early on Wednesday, April 23rd, beginning at 2:00 PM. This year’s Pre-Conference Seminar will consist of a panel discussion of the issues currently facing Pupil Services professionals. Representatives of the various professional organizations representing counselors, nurses, psychologists, social workers and school administrators will comprise the panel. The seminar will begin at 2:00 PM and will be followed, at 6:00 PM, by a meeting of the PAPSA Executive Board. Board meetings are open to any interested member. At this conference, PAPSA will offer you the opportunity to connect with experts in our field who will provide you with the latest information on topics impacting our profession. The theme this year will be Pupil Services: Changing Tomorrow Together. The program will address both legal issues and current initiatives affecting Pupil Services.

On Thursday, a variety of programs will be offered beginning with a full-morning presentation Guiding School-Age Kids to Lifetime Success, by Dr. Peter Montminy. Child Psychologist and Director of Kidstep Coaching Programs. During the luncheon the annual business meeting will be held and NAPSA Executive Director Wayne Fausnaught will bring greetings. The Award of Excellence in Student Services will be presented and door prizes will be drawn. After lunch, representatives from the district selected as this year’s winner of the Award of Excellence in Student Services will discuss the best practices that won them this recognition. The final presentation of the day will feature Beth Ann Bahn, Director of the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Division of School Health Services, who will update the audience on related issues.

On Friday, the conference will feature the acclaimed Paul Stevens Memorial Legal Seminar with attorneys Sharon Montanye and Jane Williams, along with their Associates from the law firm of Sweet, Stevens, Katz and Williams, who will address legal issues impacting special education during the morning session. Following lunch, their afternoon session will concentrate on pupil services-related legal issues. This is your opportunity to update your knowledge of recent court decisions that may influence the conduct of your programs and services. The seminar is in its 13th year and is considered to be the highlight of the Conference program.

Please join us this April for three days of networking, up-to-date information, and good company with your Pupil Services colleagues from across the state. And while you’re at it, why not plan to add a day or two and explore what Lancaster County has to offer? There are many attractions for adults and children alike. The Amish farms, music theaters, outlet malls, fresh produce markets, amusement parks, antique railroads, craft shops and other fascinating activities are available as you travel the highways and back roads throughout the Lancaster region, all within a few minutes of the Conference site. Lancaster County is a national and world-wide destination for entertainment and culture, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. This is an opportunity to combine a vacation with the exceptional professional development that the PAPSA Conference offers.

A maximum of approximately 15 hours of training will be available. Please note that PAPSA will no longer serve as an approved Act 48 provider. Instead, attendees will receive a certificate verifying the number of hours training received and the topics. They may then submit the certificate to their employing entity for Act 48 approval. For those who are unable to enter their hours, PAPSA has made arrangements through another agency to enter the hours, however, PAPSA takes no responsibility for the entry or acceptance of these hours.

In Mid-April, the weather in Lancaster is beautiful and the outlet malls are in their full glory so mark your calendars for April 23 – 25, 2014, and join your PAPSA colleagues at the conference. There is plenty to interest spouses and children in the immediate area as well, including Hershey Park and Gardens, Zoo America, Strasburg Railroad, Dutch Wonderland, an Amish Farm, and many other attractions.
